Benjamin "Benny" Shepherd (* 1980 in Geretsried ) is a German double bass player of the modern jazz .

Live and act

Schäfer already played music as a small child; he first played guitar, then classical piano, later electric guitar and electric bass , before switching to the double bass. In the school big band of the high school in his hometown he made his first experiences with jazz and from this he founded the group max.bab in 1997 with Max von Mosch , which has remained unchanged to this day. The quartet, which has released several albums, also worked with Charlie Mariano , David Friedman and Wolfgang Muthspiel , performed at Jazz Baltica and the Montreal Jazz Festival , and completed international tours on behalf of the Goethe Institute .

He studied at the Berlin University of the Arts with Sigi Busch and at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich with Paulo Cardoso . a. with Thomas Jauch ( Bavarian State Opera ), Henning Sieverts and Mike Richmond . As a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer , he was involved in the album Calling South Africa (2006). In addition to max.bab , he belongs to the groups Balloon Pilot, Das Rote Gras, Alien Ensemble, Dreiviertelblut and Geoff Goodman's Curiosities of Nature . Furthermore, there was regular collaboration with Max Frankl , Alex Czinke, Andrea Hermenau and Harald Rüschenbaum . He also leads the Ickingen school big band.

Prizes and awards

With Max.bab he won the studio award at Jugend jazzt in 2001 .
