Tobias Wember (* 1981 in Datteln ) is a German musician ( trombone , composition , arrangement ) who has made a name for himself in modern jazz .

Live and act

Wember initially received classical training on the trombone; since 1998 jazz lessons have been added to workshops by Bart and Erik van Lier as well as Jiggs Whigham and Ed Neumeister . From 2002 to 2008 he studied jazz trombone with Henning Berg and jazz composition and arrangement with Frank Reinshagen at the Cologne University of Music and Dance . From 2003 to 2005 he was part of the Federal Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer , with whom he performed in Namibia and South Africa.

Since 2003 he has given concerts with his WemberQuinett. In 2006 he founded the band Hornstrom together with trombonist Klaus Heidenreich , which won several prizes and in 2008 released the album Endlich Sinnfrei on Konnex Records . Since 2011 he has headed the Essen Ensemble-Abluft . He played in the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra (CD Plays Slayer ) and the Sunday Night Orchestra and was one of the major formations of Maxime Bender (CD Fellowship ), Matthias Schriefl , Caroline Thon (CD Panta Rhei ) and Stefan Schmid (CD exTENded ). He has also worked with Lalo Schifrin , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Paquito D'Rivera , Peter Less , Nina Hagen and Katja Riemann .

Since 2008, Wember has also been working as an instrumental teacher at the Soest Music School and the Cologne Jazz House School. Since 2014 he has written numerous compositions, such as the State of Mind suite for jazz orchestra, which he was able to realize (as was later the Richbeck Suite ) with the Subway Jazz Orchestra .

With the band Hornstrom , Wember 2007 received the Straubing New Generation Jazz Prize and the Biberacher Jazz Prize the following year . In 2015 he was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize for Composition for his piece State of Mind . In the opinion of the jury, it provides “a cross-section of his still young career as a jazz composer: based on the classic big band line-up, in addition to tutti sounds , he leaves plenty of room for the soloists, who are inspired by his cross-genre harmony for their improvisational art . "
