The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra is a large-format ensemble with at least 18 members under the direction of Daniel Glatzel , who acts as the sole composer and arranger of the formation. The orchestra, which consists of both jazz and classical musicians , was founded in 2006.
The formation is characterized by “fearless curiosity and openness for almost everything” ( Henning Sieverts ). Despite their specialization, the musicians, "borne by curiosity, enjoyment of making music and friendship, have kept their openness to a common research project."
Glatzel's music for the ensemble “doesn't fit into any drawer, changes between jazz and new music with strong handles in the traditional box of quotes, full of amazing, crazy twists and refreshing irony.” Both Sun Ra’s Arkestra and Danny Elfman’s film scores were there Godfather: “The music of the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra is an act of motor strength, an insane expenditure of air and finger work. And it is reminiscent of visions of the future from a time when the future was still made of tin and steam. ”The group also toured in the Netherlands, Switzerland, South Korea, Kazakhstan and South America. Their appearance at the JazzFest Berlin 2011 impressed with “music that sounded decidedly like music of the 21st century.” Currently (2019) the ensemble is following “open work processes that emphasize spontaneous design and collective creativity” in its program New Orchesterformen .
The first album, a very elaborate studio production, was released in 2009; Another studio album, which dealt with electronic music and its translation back into acoustic sounds, and a live album followed. There were also co-productions with The Notwist (with which the ensemble also toured) and with Efterklang . Singers like Jelena Kuljić and the Lusubilo Choir were also involved in the second album . On the third studio album Vula (2017), which for Wolf Kampmann is a successful example of a successful combination of jazz and classical music, there are "nested maps that reveal new perspectives with almost every bar."
