Tobias Preisig

Tobias Preisig (born September 18, 1981 in Zurich ) is a Swiss violinist and composer . He lives in Zurich and Berlin.

Live and act

At the age of 17, Preisig was accepted as first violinist at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern. He performed with the Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra before continuing his music studies at the New School in New York. After a European tour with the European Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2003, he studied classical violin at the Zurich University of the Arts from 2004 to 2007 . This was followed by appearances and collaborations with u. a. George Gruntz , Luciano Biondini , Thomas Demenga , Daniel Schnyder and concerts at the Montreux Jazz Festival (2008) and the Willisau Jazz Festival . Until 2012 he was a member of the Kaleidoscope String Quartet, with which he won the ZKB Jazz Prize in the same year ; he also belonged to Albin Bruns Alpin Ensemble .

In addition to his quartet, Preisig was also involved in tours with Dieter Meier's new band and formed a duet with the Swiss singer Christian Zehnder . In 2013 he founded the band Egopusher with drummer Alessandro Giannelli. Tours took the band through Germany, China, France, Belgium and Switzerland. In addition to Egopusher, he plays concerts with Levitation , a church organ duo with Stefan Rusconi . He also appears with the Cinematic Orchestra and with Colin Stetson “Sorrow”.

The quartet with pianist Stefan Aeby , bassist André Pousaz and drummer Michi Stulz was founded in 2009. Since then, the band has released three albums: 2014 Drifting ( Traumton ), 2012 In Transit (Traumton) and previously Flowing Mood (ObliqSound, 2010). The album's repertoire was presented at concerts in Switzerland, Germany and France, such as the Cully Jazz Festival , the Schaffhausen Jazz Festival and Basel Off Beat . After the release of the second album In Transit , the quartet toured Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Japan and China, where the tour ended at the Jazz Festival in Shanghai. This was followed by the third album Drifting, which was again released on the Berlin label Traumton . The following tour brought the band u. a. at festivals like the London Jazz Festival , Tokyo Jazz Festival or Jarasum in South Korea.

Prizes and awards

Preisig was awarded Generations ( Frauenfeld ) in 1998. In 2005 he received the Culture Promotion Prize of the Canton of Appenzell for a solo project and in 2011 the City of Zurich's Work Year. In 2013 the Tobias Preisig Quartet was awarded the "High Priority Jazz Promotion" from the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia . In 2015 he received a 6-month studio stay in Berlin from the Popkredit of the city of Zurich.
