Tokyo Jazz Festival

The Tokyo Jazz Festival ( Japanese 東京 JAZZ, Tōkyō Jazz ) is a festival for jazz music that takes place annually on a weekend in late summer in the Japanese capital of Tokyo . The venue has been the Tokyo International Forum since 2006 , where national and international musicians perform in front of tens of thousands of visitors. The festival is organized by the public television company NHK and the business newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei).

The Tokyo Jazz Festival first took place in 2002 and has been held annually since then. Well-known participants in 2002 were Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter . In 2003 the number of visitors rose to more than 40,000. In addition to Herbie Hancock, who performed several times, other participants included Chaka Khan , Chick Corea , Ben E. King , Ahmad Jamal , Sam Moore , Sly Stone and David Sanborn . In addition to international stars, numerous Japanese jazz musicians and groups also perform. However, the Tokyo Jazz Festival also gives international newcomers to related music styles a stage.
