ZKB Jazz Prize
The ZKB Jazz Prize is a Swiss jazz prize that has been awarded since 2003.
background
Zürcher Kantonalbank has been promoting young, innovative Swiss bands with the ZKB Jazz Prize in the Zurich Jazz Club Moods since 2002 . The highest endowed jazz prize in Switzerland, 15,000 francs for first place and 5,000 for second, is intended to enrich the diversity of the national jazz scene. It is now an important funding institution, and excellent bands have often been included in the priority jazz funding of the Pro Helvetia Foundation , which has also given them attention and recognition in the international jazz scene.
Conditions of participation
Every year, six Swiss bands have the opportunity to take part in the competition for the ZKB Jazz Prize (ZKB Jazz Prize Festival). The central style is jazz in a very open definition. This includes not only traditional forms, but also current mixes of jazz, world music , classical, electronic or pop, whereby improvisation should always be an integral part. The following criteria are taken into account when selecting the bands:
- The band is active and present in the Zurich and Swiss jazz scene
- The band has a professional appearance (performance, recordings, management)
- The manager is not older than 35 years
- The band has musical development potential
- The band takes part in the ZKB Jazz Prize Festival for the first time
The festival
The competition for the ZKB Jazz Prize takes place annually on six evenings in the Zurich Jazz Club Moods. The selection of the bands is made by the program management of the Moods jazz club. In 2017, the first three evenings and the finale of the ZKB Jazz Prize Festival were streamed live from Moods for the first time and were then available as video-on-demand for a short time.
Prices
The ZKB Jazz Prize is the highest endowed jazz prize in Switzerland. The prize money is CHF 15,000 for first place and CHF 5,000 for second place. The winner of the competition can also perform on the opening evening of the Zurich jazznojazz festival . The winner of the audience award can appear in the mood. Since 2010, the first prize winner has also received the sculpture Held Anti Held by the Zurich artist Max Grüter .
jury
The concerts are judged by a jury made up of five national and international experts. After the third day of the concert, the jury will nominate the two finalists, who will face each other again on the penultimate or last day of the festival.
