Stewy von Wattenwyl (born December 25, 1962 in Bern ) is a Swiss jazz pianist .

Wattenwyl grew up in a musical family. From the age of eight he received ten years of classical piano lessons at the Bern Conservatory . In addition to studying history at the University of Bern , he played in jazz , funk and Latin bands , received rudimentary lessons from Silvano Bazan and Joe Haider , before graduating from the Swiss Jazz School in 1998 with a diploma.

In 1990 he founded his trio, which he partially expanded with wind players. Wattenwyl released twelve albums under his own name by 2015; with Eric Alexander he leads the Generations Quartet (with Reggie Johnson and Kevin Chesham ). As a pianist and organist he can also be heard on albums with the Martin Streule Jazz Orchestra , with Rolf Häsler, with Sandro Schneebeli and with Larry Alexander.

Wattenwyl also worked with musicians from the Swiss jazz scene such as Umberto Arlati , Peter Schmidlin , Walter Schmocker , Pius Baschnagel, Daniel Schenker , Mats Spillman, Christian Münchinger and Daniel Aebi , but also with Art Farmer , Clark Terry , Alvin Queen , Bobby Shew , Bob Mintzer , Johnny Griffin , Ryan Kisor , Eric Alexander , Sandy Patton , Rhonda Dorsey, Sharon Harris and Bert Joris . Wattenwyl played at international festivals and also performed in North America, France and Germany.

Since 1999 he has been teaching at the Swiss Jazz School. Between 2007 and 2011 he worked as the deputy headmaster at Eugen Irniger's side, whose position he took over in 2011. In 2014 he received the Swiss Jazz Award with Nicole Herzog and his band.
