Christian Münchinger

Christian Münchinger (* 22. November 1969 in Zurich ) is a Swiss tenor and soprano saxophonist of modern jazz .

Live and act

Münchinger began to play the piano and recorder at the age of eight ; at the age of 16 he switched to the saxophone . After first lessons with Philipp Mall at the Zurich Jazz School, he studied with Andy Scherrer until he graduated from the Swiss Jazz School . There were also workshops and classes with Joe Lovano , Jerry Bergonzi and David Liebman and a six-month training stay in New York City in 2002 .

Münchinger first played in the Jon Hamnond- Barry Finnerty Quartet; With the SJS Big Band he performed at the Jazz Festival Montreux and the festivals in Bern and Cully as well as in North American clubs such as Birdland . He has been touring Europe with his own band since 1996. From 1998 to 2001 he was also a member of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra ; he was also touring Italy with the Europlane Orchestra . He can also be heard on albums with the Nameless Big Band and by Gabriela Krapf . He also played with Franco Ambrosetti , Vince Benedetti , Peter Bernstein , George Gruntz , Bert Joris , Roberto Ottaviano , Sandy Patton , George Robert , Roman Schwaller , Clark Terry and James Zollar .

Prizes and awards

Münchinger has received grants for concerts and tours from Pro Helvetia , Migros Culture Percentage and the City of Zurich's Popkredit. In 1996 he was honored with the Hazy at the Jazz Festival Zollikon / Zurich for the best jazz formation. In 1998 he was recognized by the International Association for Jazz Education for his outstanding musicianship . In 2001 he received the Montreux Jazz Chrysler Award .
