Manuel Mengis

Manuel Mengis (born February 4, 1972 in Visp , Canton of Valais ) is a Swiss jazz trumpeter , composer and band leader .

Live and act

Mengis learned the trumpet at the age of eleven ; During an exchange year in Canada, he came into contact with jazz . After returning, he studied earth science for two years at the ETH Zurich and trained as a mountain guide . Shortly afterwards he began training at the Lucerne Jazz School with Peter Schärli , but also with Lars Lindvall and Nat Su . Mengis played a. a. with Roberto Domeniconi, Bruno Amstadt, Hämi Hämmerli and Bruno Spoerri . After graduating, he founded his group 6 (with Christoph Erb , among others ), with which he recorded the album Into the Barn for HatHut Records in 2004 . He also worked with Vera Kappeler , Lens Huber, Harald Haerter , Norbert Pfammatter , Bänz Oester and Arthur Blythe . Mengis lives in Valais, teaches trumpet and works seasonally as a mountain guide. In 2006 he and his group 6 won the Zurich ZKB Jazz Prize . As a founding member of the IGNM-VS he has been on the board of the IGNM-VS resp. of the international festival for new music Forum Wallis with (1).
