Arthur Hnatek

Arthur Hnatek (born July 10, 1990 in Geneva ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( drums , composition ).

Live and act

Hnatek tried out various instruments in his parents' music business before deciding on drums at the age of eight. He received lessons at the local jazz school from Paul Esmerode. This was followed by studies at the professional jazz school. Then he moved to New York, where he graduated from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music with Kirk Nurock , John Hollenbeck and Mark Guiliana for a bachelor's degree. As a student he played in JM Jazz World with the Croatian HGM Jazz Orkestar .

Hnatek led bands like Melismetiq , SWIMS and a trio (with saxophonist Francesco Geminiani and bassist Fabien Iannone). To Melismetiq include trumpeter Ari Bragi Karason, pianist Shai Maestro and bassist Rick Rosato . The group SWIMS, with whom he also appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival , released their first EP on Susan Records in 2017 . In 2016 he also headed the DKSJ Swiss All-Star Project, with which he performed his suite Lualuna Tai . He was one of the bands of Tigran Hamasyan and Erik Truffaz , with whom he also released albums. He also worked with Shai Maestro, Gilad Hekselman , Dhafer Youssef , Donny McCaslin , Linda Oh , Vincent Peirani , Camila Meza , Grégoire Maret , Sophie Hunger , Franky Rousseau and Nate Wood. He can also be heard on recordings by Florian Favre and Florian Favre.

As a composer he has written for symphony orchestras, string quartets , chamber ensembles, big bands and combos . In 2013 he produced his arc lite suite with a nonet. He received commissions from the Puplinge Classique Festival, the Jeunesse Musicale , the Geneva Brass Festival and the Orchester Quipasseparlà in 2017. He was also active as a film composer and set the short film To Be Delivered by Pierre Amstutz Roch to music. In the field of electronica he has produced remixes for Manu Delago , Tigran , Eclecta, Matthieu Llodra and Erik Truffaz.

Prizes and awards

In 2006 and 2007, Hnatek was honored as the best drummer in Switzerland across all genres at the Swiss Drummer and Percussionist Competition in Altishofen . He also won the Batteur Magazine competition for best song recording. In 2019 he and his trio received the ZKB Jazz Prize .
