Matthias Tschopp (* 1983 in Zurich ) is a Swiss Jazz - baritone saxophonist .

Live and act

Tschopp, whose older brother is the trombonist Andreas Tschopp , studied music, jazz performance and pedagogy with Otmar Kramis, John Voirol and Nat Su at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences from 2004 to 2009. In 2005 he was accepted into the German federal jazz orchestra BuJazzO under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer . In the following years he took lessons from Steffen Schorn in Cologne , Herwig Gradischnig in Vienna and Christoph Grab in Zurich . He was one of the founders of the Lucerne Jazz Orchestra in 2007 and became a member of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra in the same year .

In 2008 he went to Barcelona for a semester abroad , where he took lessons from Jorge Rossy , Perico Sambeat and Ernesto Aurignac. In 2009 he founded the band Matthias Tschopp's Baritone 5. In addition to his work as a member of the Lucerne Jazz Orchestra and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, in the following years he also worked regularly with Knuts Koffer, Sarah Buechis Thali, Stefan Schultze Large Ensemble, and Rainer Tempels “Ersatzbrüdern “And the Reto Suhner Nonet . He has also received engagements in various theater and musical productions such as “ West Side Story ” and “The Black Rider” at the Lucerne Theater, “Miles or the Pendulum Clock from Montreux” (Zurich Jazz Orchestra), the musical “ Chicago ” (Theater St. Gallen) and the Cole Porter musicals "Anything Goes" and "Kiss me, Kate"

In 2011 he founded the Matthias Tschopp Quartet and composed the program "Matthias Tschopp Quartet Plays Miró" for the band, which was inspired by pictures by the painter Joan Miró . In 2012 Matthias Tschopp spent several months studying in New York .

Matthias Tschopp lives in Zurich.

Prizes and awards

In 2009 Matthias Tschopp won the Friedl Wald Foundation Prize, the Marianne and Curt Dienemann Foundation Prize in 2013 and the Zürcher Kantonalbank Jazz Prize in 2014 for the program: "Matthias Tschopp Quartet plays Miró".
