Stefan Schultze

Stefan Schultze (* 1979 ) is a jazz pianist and composer . In his style he combines elements of new music and jazz and performs his compositions "almost classically".

Live and act

Schultze first studied at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with John Taylor , Paulo Álvares and Joachim Ullrich , and then from 2006 onwards to study composition at the Manhattan School of Music with Michael Abene and Reiko Füting . He first played in the Landesjugendjazzorchester Niedersachsen and founded his quintet schultzing in 2004 (with Hanna Jursch (voc), Peter Ehwald (sax), Peter Schwebs (b), Timo Warnecke (dr)) and then the octet Oktoposse (with Matthias Knoop (tp, flh), Achim Schröter (alto sax, fl, cl), Peter Ehwald (tenor sax, cl), Benjamin Degen (tb), Martin Schulte (g), Peter Schwebs (b), Hermann Heidenreich (dr)), with the he became known and received numerous awards. Since 2006 he has been running the school project School Jazz is Cool Jazz to enable students to deal with jazz and improvised music . In 2008 he carried out the interdisciplinary and intercultural cultural project raw rough ready for music, video and dance. In 2010 he toured Macedonia at the invitation of the Goethe Institute , where he worked with his group Stefan Schultze Large Ensemble with Macedonian composers and presented his own works.

Between 2007 and 2009 he was a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop under the direction of Jim McNeely and Michael Abene . He also worked with Claudio Puntin , Frank Gratkowski , Matthias Schubert , Paulo Álvares, Jan Schreiner , Gerd Vierkötter, Nils Wogram , Tom Rainey , Herb Robertson , the Metropole Orkest and the WDR Big Band Cologne . He has appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival , the Jazz Peru Internacional in Lima and Carnegie Hall .

Schultze has headed the Uni-BigBand at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg since 2012 .

Prizes and awards

Schultze and his groups received the Best International Jazz Band Award in Granada , Spain , twice in a row , in 2006 the New Generation Award at Jazz an der Donau and in 2008 the Lower Saxony Jazz Award of the LAG Jazz. He was also awarded second prize at the 2004 Biberach Jazz Prize. In New York, his big band composition “Oracle Night”, which he recorded with his Stefan Schultze's New York Big Band, received an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award . In 2009 he received first prize at the international ArtEZ Composition Contest in Enschede with his big band composition “Green Falling” . In 2010 he received the WDR Jazz Prize for Composition.
