Mateusz Smoczyński (born March 6, 1984 in Warsaw ) is a Polish violinist and composer who moves between jazz , classical and world music .

Act

Smoczyński studied violin at the Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy (today Fryderyk Chopin University of Music ) in Warsaw with Andrzej Gębski. He made his debut with the Zbigniew Namysłowski quintet in 1999 and has since performed at some of the most important jazz festivals and venues in Europe and the United States.

Smoczyński recorded the album Inspirations with his own quintet in 2006 , which was followed by Expressions in 2008 . The debut album brought him a grant from the Polish Ministry of Culture in 2007; a year later he received a "Jazz Oscar". With Joachim Kühn , Bronisław Suchanek , Janusz Stefański and Bohdan Jarmołowicz, he first performed the jazz concerto for violin, symphony orchestra and rhythm group composed by Zbigniew Seifert in 2009 . Together with his brother Jan Smoczyński on the Hammond organ and the Russian drummer Alexander Zinger, he founded his New Trio , with which he released the CD Simultaneous Abstractions in 2010 , which was nominated for a Fryderyk . In 2013 the trio released a second album, Perpendicular Realities .

Smoczyński was also a founding member of the Atom String Quartet , with whom he has presented several albums, for example with Zakopower , Tomasz Wendt and Vladyslav Sendecki , and has toured internationally. He was also a member of the Turtle Island Quartet between 2012 and 2015 . The solo album Metamorphoses with his own compositions and the quintet album Berek (Universal Music Polska) followed under his own name in 2017 . In a duo with Joachim Kühn, the album Speaking Sound was released in 2020 , which received excellent reviews. In addition, Smoczyński worked with Tomasz Stańko , Bobby McFerrin , Gil Goldstein , Richie Beirach , Glen Moore , Jarosław Śmietana , Krzesimir Dębski , Janusz Skowron , Kazimierz Jonkisz and Paquito D'Rivera ; He has given several concerts with the German band schultzing . He can also be heard on albums by Grégoire Maret , Kayah , Branford Marsalis / Anna Maria Jopek , André Ochodlo , the Grzech Piotrowski World Orchestra , Leszek Możdżer , Tierney Sutton and Bodek Janke .

Smoczyński is the author of chamber music and symphonic works; his violin concerto Adam's Apple was premiered in 2018 by the National Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio in Katowice.

Smoczyński won the 2nd Zbigniew Seifert International Violin Competition in 2016. In 2017 he was appointed professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music.
