The Turtle Island Quartet (until 2007: Turtle Island String Quartet ) is a string quartet that is recognized as an ensemble in jazz because of its improvisational skills and repertoire . Founded in 1985 and based in the San Francisco area, the quartet has had several line-up changes and has worked with musicians such as Paquito D'Rivera and Kenny Barron .
It received a Grammy Award for its 2005 and 2007 productions .
