Florian Menzel

Florian Menzel (born August 30, 1988 in Eslohe ) is a German jazz musician ( trumpet ).

Live and act

Menzel discovered music on the piano at the age of four, but quickly switched to the trumpet. At the age of five he played so intensely with his father's instrument that he gave him his first own trumpet and also taught him himself. He gained his first jazz experience in the big band of the Franz Stock Gymnasium in Arnsberg. After training at the Glen Buschmann Jazz Academy in Dortmund, he spent four years as a young student at the Musikhochschule in Cologne with Andy Haderer . He was a member of the NRW Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Federal Jazz Orchestra . Since 2004 he has been studying at the Jazz Institute Berlin with Gerard Presencer and Malte Burba . In addition to his academic training, he completed workshops with Klaus Osterloh , Till Brönner and Illana Schapira-Marinescu.

Menzel has been a freelance professional musician since then and lives in Berlin. Together with Markus Ehrlich, Christopher Colaço, Igor Spallati and Philipp Schaeper , he formed the collaborative band The Major Minors in 2009 . Since 2017 he has also been on the road with his quintet, which included Oilly Wallace , Uri Gincel (piano), Felix Henkelhausen (double bass) and Tobias Backhaus (drums).

He also worked in the Dieter Michel Bigband, Atlanta Jazzband , WDR Bigband , the European Yamaha Bigband , the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra , the Ed Partyka Jazz Orchestra, the Sunday Night Orchestra or Electro Deluxe and as a theater musician (including Deutsches Theater Berlin , Staatsoper Hannover ) . As a composer, he wrote part of the film music for Oh Boy by Jan-Ole Gerster in 2012 . He can also be heard on albums by Stefan Schultze Large Ensemble, Malte Schiller's Red Ballon , Reinhold Schmölzer & Orchest • ra • conteur, Laura Winkler , Jazzanova as well as with Clueso , Die Fantastischen Vier , Matthias Schweighöfer and the soundtrack to Babylon Berlin .

Prizes and awards

Menzel was a prize winner at Jugend musiziert . As a trumpeter he was awarded the “SkodaJazz Prize” of the German Jazz Federation in 2007. In 2009 he took first place in the “Yamaha Trumpet Contest”. During his studies in Berlin, Menzel was honored with the "Savoy Award of Excellence 2011" for his extraordinary commitment on a musical and social level. With the band The Major Minors he received the “German Film Prize in the Best Film Music category” and the “Best Film Music 2012” award from the Association of German Film Critics.
