The shoulder patch weaver ( Ploceus badius , syn. Hyphantornis badius ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of the bunting weaver ( Ploceus ).

The Latin additional species comes from the Latin badius 'chestnut-colored, brown' .

The bird is only found in Sudan and South Sudan .

The range includes habitats with tall grass near rivers with scattered bushes and trees.

features

The species is 14 cm tall, the male weighs between 18 and 28 g, the female between 16 and 24 g. The male has forehead, cap, reins , cheeks and ear covers , chin and throat black with a narrow extension to the chest in the brood plumage . Neck with collar to the rest of the breast dark brown, the rest of the underside brown, the upper side yellow-brown. The wings are striped gray with yellowish tips. The tail is yellow. In the female, the top, head, neck to chest are pale yellow, flanks and belly are light yellow, and tail and rump are yellow.

The species is listed as monotypical by the Handbook of the Birds of the World and by Weaver Watch.

The International Ornithological Union, however, carries the P. b. axillaris ( Heuglin , 1867) in South Sudan as a separate Ssp.

The shoulder patch weaver seems to hybridize with the gold coat weaver ( Ploceus taeniopterus ) in Sudan .

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of plant seeds . The species is sociable and lives in small groups, nomadically away from the breeding area outside of the breeding season.

The breeding season is between September and October. The species is probably monogamous and breeds in colonies . The clutch consists of 2 to 3 more or less spotted eggs.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
