Jazzanova attracted international attention in 1997 with the uptempo Jazz Brasil number “Fedime's Flight”. The hub for the sound cosmos of Jazzanova is the “Delicious Donuts” club in Berlin. Alexander Barck, Jürgen von Knoblauch and Claas Brieler played their mix of jazz, latin and house here in the mid-90s . As seasoned big-city DJs, they didn't want to chase after the trend of remixing and self-publishing. Together with hip-hop producer Rosko Kretschmann (Kosma), they made their first tracks for the Delicious Donuts compilations. With the second edition of the club sampler, Kretschmann commissioned his friends Axel Reinemer and Stefan Leisering, who published together under the pseudonyms "Extended Spirit" and "Pathless". Since the appearance of the jointly produced titles was in jeopardy, the disc jockeys quickly founded their own label (Jazzanova Records) and integrated the three producers into the band and called themselves Jazzanova.

Through the connection to Compost label boss Michael Reinboth, “Fedime's Flight” caught the attention of the popular European nu-jazz DJs. International DJ jobs and remix jobs for Marshmellow, Visit Venus, Karma, UFO, 4hero and Ian Pooley followed . These were released on various samplers and a first EP. Own compilations and the founding of the Sonar collective rounded off the range. According to Claas, Jazzanova used many jazz records, Brazilian records, latino records, boogie, soul, folk, soundtracks and rock-heavy, experimental fusion tracks from the 70s as a source of inspiration . We're trying to translate that into formats that are used today: House, Drum and Bass , Jungle , Trip-Hop , Nu Jazz, Hip Hop and so on. ” Source?

After this founding phase, several years passed before Jazzanova presented their official debut album In Between . Originally announced for 2000, it was only released in spring 2002. Interrupted by remix assignments ( Calexico , Rainer Trüby , MJ Cole , Liquid Lounge, Incognito , Eternal Sun, King Britt feat. Ursula Rucker , Koop , Roy Davis Junior), they worked on them a new profile: Moving away from Latin jazz , which was initially their trademark, In Between “convinced” with varied programming that no longer committed itself to a specific style.

After two further remix albums, in 2005 Blue Note commissioned the Jazzanova collective with the task of compiling the fourth edition of the Blue Note Trip label series and carefully applying the remix hand on the occasion . This includes the privilege of being able to access the archives of the jazz label. On the resulting double album, rare groove classics and Latinophile finds received a contemporary sound costume.

The compilation The Remixes 2002–2005 also gives an overview . There are u. a. Masters at Work , Eddie Gale , Marcos Valle , Calexico and Free Design. For Scrambled / Mashed , their second contribution to the Blue Note Trip series, Jazzanova selected pieces by jazz greats such as Horace Silver , Grant Green , Gary Bartz and Andrew Hill and combined them with more contemporary sounds by Raul Midón , David Bowie & Pat Metheny , Madlib and Medeski, Martin & Wood .

In 2008 Jazzanova released her album Of All the Things on Verve Music . The sample- based production method has been significantly changed in favor of simultaneous recordings with musicians. Guest musicians such as Leon Ware , Paul Randolph, Phonte, Dwele , Bembe Segue and Thief were presented. In 2009 the band went on tour with singer Paul Randolph from Detroit. There were performances at the Melt , North Sea Jazz Festival , Electric Picnic, Flow Festival and Dour Festival. Instrumentalists in Jazzanova's live band include: a. Sebastian Studnitzky , Arne Jansen , Kalle Kalima , Sebastian Borkowski, Thomas Pfirmann, Stefan Ulrich, Paul Kleber and Christoph Adams .

Since the beginning of 2009, Alexander Barck and Matthias Hellwig have been hosting the program Kaleidoskop on Saturday from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Radio Eins , which deals with the music genre of Jazzanova. Barck can be heard every Monday from midnight to 2 a.m. on Funkhaus Europa with the Jazzanova Radio Show .

On June 29, 2018, The Pool, the first Jazzanova studio album in 10 years, was released. The guests include jazz pop artist Jamie Cullum , rapper Oddisee and soul singer Pete Yosef . It was album of the week on the radio station ByteFM .
