King Britt
King James Britt (* 1968 ) is an American House - and Techno - musician , DJ and label owner . He publishes under his real name and numerous pseudonyms, of which Oba Funke , Scuba and Sylk 130 are among the best known. Britt picks up numerous influences from hip-hop , soul , R&B , gospel and jazz in his music .
Life and career
Britt, who grew up in Philadelphia , has been involved with music since his youth and began building up an extensive record collection at an early age. In the early 1990s he toured first as a DJ with the rap group Digable Planets . Together with Josh Wink , he soon produced his first own tracks. Under the project name E-Culture , both produced the single Tribal Confusion in 1990 , which appeared on Strictly Rhythm . In 1994, Britt founded the music label Ovum Records together with Wink .
In 1998, Britt's debut album When The Funk Hits The Fan was released , which he co-produced with the Sylk 130 Collective, which consisted of Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Darryl Burgee, James Poyser, Alison Crockette, Ursula Rucker , Tony “Capital A” Green and Monnette Sudler. With a cover version of the Indeep disco classic Last Night a DJ Saved My Life , the project achieved chart success in the UK in 1998.
In addition to his own publications, Britt also works as a remixer and has provided reworks for musicians such as Miles Davis , Curtis Mayfield , Radiohead , Alison Moyet , Everything but the Girl and Chic .
In 2007 he was accepted into the Composition category of the Pew Fellowships in the Arts at Philadelphia-based The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage .
