Martin Schulte (* 1979 in Duisburg ) is a German jazz guitarist and composer of modern jazz .

Live and act

Schulte received classical piano lessons at the age of six . At the age of thirteen he received electric guitar lessons from Mirko van Stiphaut at the Niederrheinische Musik- und Kunstschule in Duisburg. In 1997 and 1999 he was awarded first prize in the Jugend jazzt competition. From 2000 he studied jazz guitar at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Werner Neumann and Frank Haunschild . From 2009 to 2010, the DAAD scholarship holder attended Queens College, City University of New York , where he took instrumental lessons with Ben Monder and Paul Bollenback and composition lessons with Mike Holober and Darcy James Argue . In 2013 he completed a master's degree in composition / arrangement with Jürgen Friedrich at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim.

Schulte plays in various formations, such as Nicolas Simion , Christine Corvisier , Magnus & Ferenc Mehl , Veronika Morscher / Matthew Halpin or the Large Ensemble by Stefan Schultze . In 2009 he founded his own quartet with Peter Ehwald , Matthias Akeo Nowak and Mirek Pyschny . He works with Annette Maye in the Duo Doyna . He also worked with Antonio Hart , Claudio Puntin , Claudius Valk , Frank Möbus , John Ruocco , Nils Wogram , Oliver Lutz , Pablo Held , Steffen Schorn , the WDR Big Band , the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra and the Duisburg Symphony Orchestra . He played at the Leverkusener Jazz Days , the Ibiza Jazz Festival a. v. a. and was heard in several radio productions such as in WDR , Deutschlandfunk or BR .

Since 2012 he has been a lecturer for jazz guitar and ensemble at the Saar University of Music .

Prizes and awards

As a teenager, Schulte received first prizes at Jugend jazzt . With the band Mumble Jumble he won 1st place at the Biberach Jazz Prize in 2006 and in the same year 2nd prize at the jazz competition of Hoilaart in Belgium with the Magnus Mehl Quintet. He and the Oktoposse band each received a prize in the International Young Band category in 2005 at Jazz an der Donau and at the International Jazz Festival Granada in Spain. In addition, he received the Lower Saxony Jazz Promotion Prize with the octet Oktoposse and was nominated with the Martin Schulte Quartet for the German Record Critics' Prize in the Jazz Modern category for the album In Transit .
