Darcy James Argue (born May 23, 1975 in Vancouver ) is a Canadian jazz pianist , composer , arranger and big band leader.

Life

Darcy James Argue began his musical career in the Montréal jazz scene and came to the United States in 2000 to study composition at the New England Conservatory ; there he had lessons with Bob Brookmeyer , furthermore with Maria Schneider and John Hollenbeck . In 2003 Argue moved to New York, in 2005 he founded the 18-piece big band Darcy James Argue's Secret Society . Argue borrowed the band name from the Alan Moore comic The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The soloists of the big band include Ingrid Jensen , Erica von Kleist and Ryan Keberle . In 2009 the big band's debut album, Infernal Machines , was released on the New York independent label, New Amsterdam Records; the title refers to a saying by John Philip Sousa on the radio.

In 2006 Argue directed the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra as part of the Jazz.cologne Festival; In early 2008 the Canadian branch of his band, Secret Society North , for performances in Montréal and Toronto. He is also a founding member of the New York Composers' Association Pulse , which has organized projects with soloists such as John Abercrombie , John McNeil and Pete McCann . His composition The Golden Age was premiered and recorded by the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra (Los Angeles). In 2010 he received a composition commission from the Brooklyn Philharmonic Composer Mentorship Program ( Dean St. ). He also wrote the string quartet Body Double and arranged for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Lizz Wright , for Shelby Lynne and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. In 2011 he performed the multimedia project Brooklyn Babylon . In 2016 he released the album Society Real Enemies (New Amsterdam). Argue lives in Brooklyn .

Appreciation

In 2009 he was awarded the Down Beat Critics' Prize for Best Newcomer both as a composer and as a band leader. A number of critics compare Argue to a number of composer bandleaders such as Gil Evans , Maria Schneider , John Hollenbeck , Charles Mingus , Duke Ellington , Carla Bley and Bob Brookmeyer . In 2011 Infernal Machines was nominated for a Grammy for the best album by a large jazz ensemble .
