Andreas Schaerer (born December 17, 1976 in Visp ) is a Swiss jazz singer .

Live and act

Schaerer studied after childhood and adolescence in the Emmental and Wallis up to the primary and real teacher license in 1997 at the Hofwil teacher training college . He gained his first stage experience as the guitarist of the punk band Hektor Leben . After two long trips to Latin America, he studied singing with Sandy Patton and Denise Bregnard, improvisation with Andy Scherrer , and composition with Klaus König , Christian Henking and Frank Sikora at the Bern University of the Arts between 2000 and 2006 .

He founded his own projects, such as the sextet Hildegard learns to fly , with whom he toured several times in Europe, but also in Russia ( Cinema Hildegard , 2010) and in China; For this formation he writes "bizarre programs between art song and crazy, tricky gimmicks." He is also active in improvisation duos with Bänz Oester and Lucas Niggli and runs a trio with Martin Eberle (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Peter Rom (guitar) as well as with Christoph Steiner and Claude Meier Das Beet . In addition, he works as a studio musician and composer in various styles from free music to hip-hop to the setting of computer games and animated films.

In 2009 and 2010 he worked with Bobby McFerrin in the improvised opera Bobble in Basel and Moscow. He has also appeared with Soweto Kinch , Christy Doran's New Bag , The Ploctones , Kaspar Ewald's Exorbitantes Kabinett , Jan Galega Brönnimann , Colin Vallon , Elina Duni and Joe Haider , among others .

Schaerer teaches jazz singing, improvisation and ensemble playing as a lecturer at the University of the Arts in Bern. In 2007 he also founded the Bern Jazz Workshop together with Marc Stucki and Benedikt Reising .

Prizes and awards

In 2008 he won the ZKB Jazz Prize with his sextet Hildegard learns to fly . Since 2010 he has been part of the Pro Helvetia priority jazz funding program with this band . The album At the Age of Six I Wanted to Be a Cook by the trio Rom / Schaerer / Eberle was featured on NDR as CD of the week in 2014 . The album Arcanum , recorded with Lucas Niggli , made it onto the list of the best of the German Record Critics' Prize in 2014 .
