Soweto Kinch (born July 10, 1978 in London ) is a British jazz musician ( alto and tenor saxophone , rap ).

Live and act

Kinch, who comes from a theater family, started playing the saxophone at the age of nine, having previously learned the clarinet in elementary school . After meeting Wynton Marsalis as a teenager , he became involved in jazz, first as a pianist and later on the alto saxophone . He first studied history at the University of Oxford in 1999, but then decided to take a jazz education after being offered a place at Tomorrow's Warriors . He was sponsored by Gary Crosby , Courtney Pine, and Denys Baptiste . He recorded Crosby's Jazz Jamaica All Stars in 2001, and in the same year formed his own trio with bassist Michael Olatuja and drummer Troy Miller, who accompanied Courtney Pine and performed at the Royal Festival Hall and the Cheltenham International Jazz Festival . His debut album was released in 2003.

Prizes and awards

Kinch in 2002 not only as a rising star at the Jazz Awards the BBC excellent, but also went as a winner of the International Sax Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival produced and received the White Saxophone Prize . In 2003 and 2007 he won the Mobo Award for best jazz act. In 2004 he received two BBC Radio Jazz Awards for best instrumentalist and for best band; also received the Peter Whittingham Award for Jazz Innovation. He was named best alto saxophonist at the British Jazz Awards 2017 .
