Dieter Meier (* 4. March 1945 in Zurich ) is a Swiss conceptual artist and musician who primarily as a singer of the electro - duo Yello became internationally known.

Life

Dieter Meier began studying law , but broke it off. He then worked in a bank and then as a professional poker player . His father - coming from a poor background - was a successful entrepreneur as a private banker .

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Meier, who describes himself as an individual anarchist , drew attention to himself with extraordinary activities: for example, in 1968 he staged a street theater at the main entrance of the Zurich department store Magazine zum Globus and in 1971 he gave in New York City gave each passer-by a receipt for a US dollar that said the words "Yes" or "No" to them.

In 1972, as a contribution to the Concept Art program of documenta 5 at Kassel Central Station , Meier had a metal plaque concreted in with the following inscription: "On March 23, 1994 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Dieter Meier will stand on this plate". He then realized this. The plaque was removed that same day. He said on the NDR Talk Show in April 2014: “Time and finiteness, that concerns me in many aspects. It was a really touching event to be standing there 22 years later, which was presumptuous [...] A lot of people came, some of whom even flew over to the place. Hundreds of people stood there. For them this board, over which they went to work every day, was that some Meier will be there 22 years later, it was like a memento mori [...] It was this nonsensical date of a very unimportant fact [...] The People came to see what kind of guy is this. I had made up my mind not to actually talk, but just stand there. I've talked to dozens of people who even held out their plane tickets to sign. "

Another Meier project is called Le Rien En Or ( The Nothing in Gold ). Aside from a gold ball, he used this title to gold plate eleven everyday objects in downtown Zurich; this includes, for example, parts of bridge railings, signal boards, street posts and gutters. This gilding should give the objects more attention. The golden ball La Boule d'Or Centenaire ( golden ball of the century ) is supposed to cover twelve meters on a wooden track on eight specified dates over the next 100 years. On April 26, 2008, for example, this happened in front of a casino in Hamburg .

Dieter Meier has been married for the second time since 1974, father of three daughters and a son from this marriage and a son from the first marriage. He has five residences located in Zurich, Berlin, Los Angeles, Argentina and Ibiza . When his trademark his mustache, neckerchief, handkerchief and cigar apply.

music

At the end of the 1970s, Dieter Meier met Boris Blank . Together with Carlos Perón they formed the band Yello . Meier is a singer and lyricist at Yello and is also responsible for the production of the music videos . One of Yello's most commercially successful songs is The Race . It was used from 1988 to 1990 as the theme tune for the Formula One music program and later for trailers by the television station Eurosport .

In 1988 Meier started a film project with the music of Yello as a producer, director and actor. The film was completed in 2001 and shown at the 2002 Berlinale . A revised version was shown at the Zurich Film Festival in 2009.

In 1996 Meier bought the former villa of the silent film star Antonio Moreno in Los Feliz , a district of Los Angeles . In the music studio there, Meier works with Boris Blank on film music and videos.
