occupation

Solness is a German film drama and literary film adaptation from 2015 by Michael Klette based on the motifs of the play Baumeister Solneß by Henrik Ibsen .

action

The aging well-known architect Solness, owner of a renowned architecture office, is exhausted, powerless and without really new ideas. In order to stay in the industry, he hires young architects for his projects. In addition, Solness has what appears to be an incurable brain disease and his two biological children were killed in a house fire. The relationship with his wife Aline is also broken, so that a divorce may be imminent. In addition, Solness is obviously fraught with other problems.

About ten years ago he is said to have promised Hilde, who was still a young girl at the time, to build a kingdom and a castle for her. Now when the young adult and attractive woman gets in touch and wants him to keep his promise, this makes it even more complicated. The star architect can no longer remember them and initially rejects them. Nevertheless, Hilde inevitably clings to Solness in a manipulative way, making use of her seductive skills, and this seems to change his life. In the course of time, visions and realities mix with one another more and more often. In the end Solness has no way out and decides to take his own life by jumping off one of his building objects from the roof.

criticism

“The adaptation, brilliantly played in the title role, cleverly modernizes the historical model and turns the conflicts pleasantly relaxed into the archetypal. The staging combines issues such as age, illness and the feeling of not having done justice to fellow human beings with critical comments on neoliberalism and the current economic crisis "
