Albin Brun (born August 21, 1959 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss jazz and world musician ( saxophone , Schwyzerörgeli , Duduk , flutes , other instruments, composition) and is regarded in Switzerland as "a key figure in the scene between jazz and new folk music".

Live and act

Brun began to play in bands such as Zöpflimusig, Cantum la Canzon and AHV Folk in the 1970s . He studied at the Lucerne Academy for School and Church Music (graduated in 1984 with the Diploma School Music I) and at the jazz schools in Lucerne, Bern and St. Gallen.

At first he played in bands like René Widmers IG Freude , Saxoflex or the René Twerenbold Big Band . Then he developed an atmospherically dense, permeable musical language on his saxophones and the Schwyzerörgeli. He founded his own groups such as the Interkantonale Blasabfuhr , which initially played street music and since 1989 has released four albums. This was followed by Albin Alpine quintet , Kraanich , Albin Brun Alpin Ensemble , Albin Bruns NAH Trio or NAH Quartet , Albin Brun Trio & Isa Wiss and Kazalpin (3 singers from Belarus), with which he presented since 2000 more albums. There were also (duo) performances with musicians as diverse as Paul Giger , Bruno Amstad , Ricardo Regidor , Isa Wiss , Ruedi Häusermann , Markus Lauterburg, Andy Aegerter, Claudio Strebel, Andi Gabriel, Agnes Hunger, Maria Walpen, Christian Hartmann, Roland von Flüe , Florian Favre , Balts Nill , Patricia Draeger ( Glisch d'Atun , 2016) or the vocal group Vocabular . In the trio Sputnik Muzik he worked with guitarist Othmar Brügger and percussionist Willy Kotoun in jazz idiom ( overflight , 2007). He was also involved in Corin Curschellas ' La Grischa and a member of the Frächdächs (improvised children's concerts with Isa Wiss, Luca Sisera , Markus Lauterburg) and in the Andreas Gabriel Ensemble . From 2017 he often plays in a duo with the cellist and Swiss orchestra player Kristina Brunner and is a member of the Ala Fekra Project with musicians from Switzerland and Egypt.

As a multi-instrumentalist and composer, he has written and played music for many theater productions and interdisciplinary projects such as dance theater, radio plays on Radio SRF, DOK films SRF, choir projects and readings. He worked u. a. with the magician Alex Porter and with authors such as Thomas Hürlimann, Franz Hohler , Gisela Widmer, Stefanie Grob, Paul Steinmann, Tim Krohn , Beat Sterchi, Lorenz Marti and many more

Brun is a guest lecturer at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, where he also directed the folk music ensemble Alpinis from 2017 (CD 2019 of the same name). Since 1991 he has been teaching saxophone at the Lucerne Cantonal School.

Prizes and awards

Brun received a work grant from the city and canton of Lucerne in 1995 and the Kriens community sponsorship award in 1999. In 2001 he was honored with the SAC Culture Prize. In 2013 he received the Art and Culture Prize of the City of Lucerne , endowed with CHF 25,000 , because "with his broad musical oeuvre he has shaped jazz, folk music and the theater landscape in Switzerland for over thirty years".
