Swissjazzorama

The swissjazzorama currently sees itself as a central archive and information center, whose primary task is to depict the history of jazz in Switzerland as comprehensively as possible. It is based in Uster in the canton of Zurich .

history

In 1989 the association “Pro Jazz Switzerland” was founded by the collector and publicist Otto Flückiger . Its collections formed the first holdings of an archive to be built up. From 1992 to 1996 it was operated as a small jazz museum in Arlesheim , Canton Basel-Land .

Due to financial problems, the location had to be abandoned and the holdings at the Basel Jazz School had to be stored. Finally they were brought to Uster in 1998 and found their temporary location in the immediate vicinity of the “music container” set up in 2000, a nationally known jazz concert stage. In addition to organizing exhibitions on the subject of “Jazz in Switzerland” in the foyer of this very concert venue, the focus was on recording, viewing and evaluating bequests and donations, which were now received in large numbers and in large numbers.

The association now operates under the name swissjazzorama, and since 2016 it has been partially managed by Hans Peter Künzle .

activities

Swissjazzorama manages and looks after large stocks of image and sound carriers , non-fiction books , biographies , posters , photographs , press articles, instruments , devices, etc. According to the club's name, preference is given to things with a Swiss connection, so-called Helvetica. Archive tours take place by arrangement, and archive exhibitions are also held regularly.

As a cultural institution, the association is financially supported by the community and canton as well as by numerous private patrons .
