Paul Giger

Paul Giger (* 1952 in Herisau ) is a Swiss violinist and composer .

Biography and work

Giger received his first violin lessons at the age of eight. In 1970/71 he traveled through Asia as a street musician. He then completed a music degree in Winterthur and Bern . He passed his teaching diploma with Peter Mezger in 1976, his soloist diploma with Ulrich Lehmann in 1980. After that he was concertmaster of the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra for three years ; since 1983 he has been working as a freelancer.

Giger's repertoire includes violin literature from the baroque to the modern . Other focal points are improvisation , jazz and various folklore traditions . Pierre Favre , Jan Garbarek , the Hilliard Ensemble and the Estonian Chamber Choir, among many others, were among his musical partners.

Giger has been composing choral, orchestral and chamber music since 1992 and has so far submitted six recordings under his own name to ECM .

In some of his compositions and as an interpreter he made the viola d'amore (again?) Public.
