Corin Curschellas (born July 2, 1956 in Chur , Romance pronunciation [ ˌkɔrin kur'ʃe: lɐs ]) is a Swiss singer-songwriter , singer ( jazz , folk , folk , world music , chanson ), Rhaeto-Romanic singer ( Chanzun rumantscha ), improvisation artist ( “Instant composing” ), actress ( theater , film , musical ), speaker ( radio plays , audio books ) and lecturer for singing.

Life

Curschellas was born in Chur ( Graubünden , Switzerland) in 1956 and grew up there. She attended the canton school in Chur and graduated in 1977 with a primary school teacher certificate.

From 1977 to 1983 Corin Curschellas studied acting and theater education at the Zurich University of the Arts and three semesters of musicology at the University of Zurich .

Corin Curschellas lived in Berlin from 1983 to 1989 , then in Basel for two years . Thanks to a scholarship, she moved to Paris in 1991 , where she finally lived until 2000, with a two-year break in New York from 1995 to 1997. From 2000 to 2005 she commuted between Paris and Zurich.

“I've always lived in strange worlds, but the poems and songs made a connection with my homeland. [...] I was homesick. In Berlin I read the thickest books on Romansh culture. Before I was hardly interested, but that's where I wanted to know. I met so many people who also talked about their origins that I also tried to clarify or consolidate my identity. "

The song Senza patria , German without a home, comes from this eventful epoch of her life .

Since 2009, the artist lives in Zurich and in sursilvanischen Rueun , 30 km from Chur. In Rueun she lives with her partner, the sculptor Linard Nicolay , in the house of her grandparents, the holiday home of her childhood.

Corin Curschella's actual mother tongue is Swiss German . Although she learned from her father to speak Sursilvan almost perfectly, she does not write any Rhaeto-Romanic songs herself . However, she sings texts and songs by Romansh authors in all Romansh idioms as well as Rumantsch Grischun .

In connection with the deepening of the Romanesque roots and the return to Rueun, Corin Curschellas says:

Act

Corin Curschellas covers different vocal genres : singer-songwriter, jazz, folk, chanson, world music, folk song , musical, improvisation. Ironically, she describes herself as a "sound carrier".

Corin Curschellas sings most often in Romansh, Swiss German and English , but also in Standard German , French or Italian or even in fantasy languages .

From 1977 to 1983 Corin Curschellas worked with Walter Lietha and with him he played albums like Dia Fahrenda, Under de Brugg, Obacht, Drum sing i grad drum or Liebi Schwiizer guet Nacht . Musicians in this band were: Max Lässer, Bruno Spoerri, Philipp Kienholz, Walter and Peter Kaiser, Sal Celi, Joel Reiff. Guest musicians: Andreas Vollenweider, Roli Mosimann.

Between 1993 and 1997 Corin Curschellas was the singer of the Vienna Art Orchestra . In 2009 she toured again with this orchestra.

Corin Curschellas then worked on productions by Peter Scherer , Noël Akchoté , David Byrne , Andreas Vollenweider , Max Lässer ( Überlandorchester ), Fritz Hauser , Heiri Känzig , Christian Marclay , Hélène Labarrière and Yves Robert . With Steve Argüelles , Christophe “Disco” Minck and Benoît Delbecq , she was at times an integral part of the jazz and improvisation group The Recyclers .

She released eight albums with her own songs and has realized numerous musical projects. Selected details in chronological order:

• In 1991 she toured Egypt and Tunisia with the Musiciens du Nil , Christy Doran and Fritz Hauser .
• From 1991 to 1995 she performed with guitarist Nguyên Lê , bassist Richard Bona and drummer Steve Argüelles in a Jimi Hendrix project entitled "Are You Experienced?" at numerous festivals in Europe , North Africa and La Réunion .
• In 1992 in Paris Corin Curschellas wrote the song La pura (German The Peasant Woman ), based on the poem of the same name by the pastor and poet Gion Cadieli . It combines the traditional theme presented in an alpine language with foreign, Moroccan sounds. The song got into the hot rotation of the national broadcaster DRS 3 .
• Her first major world music project was Sud des Alpes in 2000 : Corin Curschellas, in collaboration with the Senegalese Douane Saliou Sène and Abdou Samb, combines Swiss folk songs with sounds and rhythms from Senegal, including the Senegalese Wolof . The song La pura finds a new form within this project.
• Also in 2000 the world music project Global Vocal Meeting with Corin Curschellas, Abdoulaye Diabate ( Mali ), Rinde Eckert ( USA ), Mónika «Mitsou» Juhász Miczura ( Hungary ), Sudha Ragunathan ( India ) and Senge ( Madagascar ) came into being As part of the voice festival in Lörrach . • With the Swiss jazz pianist Vera Kappeler together Corin Curschellas occurred in 2004 at the Schauspielhaus Zurich in peacock-matinee of Werner Want Berger , and along with it and Wolfgang Mitterer and Peter Herbert , she toured in 2005 under the name "We 4" by Austria .
• Together with the Turkish Özay Fecht , she founded a global New Year's song project in 2005.
• On the 2008 album Grischunit she sings in Romansh and is accompanied by Marc Ribot , Peter Scherer, Shahzad Ismaily and Matt Johnson . The recording took place in the most urban New York, far away from rural Rumantschia. The lyrics are by Linard Bardill , Benedetto Vigne , Ann Dee , Thomas Cathomen , Arno Camenisch and Corin Curschellas himself. The name of the album refers to the rare mineral grischunite , which occurs only in Graubünden worldwide.
• With the album La Grischa from 2012, Corin Curschellas presented in collaboration with Albin Brun, Patricia Draeger and Claudio Strebel a collection of old, Rhaeto-Romanic folk songs with an idiosyncratic mix of instruments: Schwyzerörgeli / accordion , Duduk , soprano saxophone , toy piano , waterphone and double bass .

Instrumental music

Corin Curschellas is a multi-instrumentalist : She plays the piano , keyboards and the Indian harmonium , dulcimers and other zithers , percussion , ukulele and the accordion.

Ethnic music aspects

A large part of the musical work of Corin Curschellas is dedicated to the Chanzun Rumantscha and has an ethnographic aspect: In 1983 Corin Curschellas came across the special edition of a copy of the Canzun de Sontga Margriata (German song of St. Margaret ) in Walter Lietha's bookstore in Chur. from 1938. Curschellas reworked the only fragmentarily preserved traditional song melody from the 8th century based on the model by Christian Caminada and is therefore considered the rediscoverer of the oldest legend of the Rhaeto-Romanic people. She released the song in five different versions.

Curschellas collects old Rhaeto-Romanic cultural assets - in the case of Origins (trad.) She used the «Alfons Maissen» archive from the 1930s -, distributes the texts with her albums and concerts and, at the same time, writes the La Grischa songbook . The book La Grischa 1 contains the texts and harmonies for the songs from the albums La Grischa and Origins (trad.) Music-ethnographic information by Iso Albin . This ethnographic work has also earned her the name "Grande Dame of contemporary and traditional Romansh songs". At the same time Corin Curschellas distances himself from alpine folklore in pop style.

The Suisse Miniature concert project also stands in this context : The project arose from a “Convivenza” event organized by the Lia Rumantscha in 2010. By 2013, a collection of songs in the three Graubünden languages ​​of Walser German , Italian and Romansh was created. The name of the project refers, on the one hand, to the Ticino open-air facility Swissminiatur and, on the other hand, to the fact that the canton of Graubünden is a kind of Switzerland in miniature, linguistically and culturally.

The second songbook by Corin Curschellas was published on October 1, 2016: LA GRISCHA 2, 49 Rhaeto-Romanic folk songs, all verse texts in Rumantsch and German with explanations in Rumantsch and German by Laura Decurtins. Corin Curschella's setting of the Canzun de Sontga Margriata (German Song of Saint Margaret ), one of the oldest Rhaeto-Romanic texts, comes from the Mono program . The song is about the Sontga Margriata, who works as a man, disguised as a herdsman, on an alp, but whose disguise is uncovered due to an accident. Corin Curschellas interprets the song in terms of environmental protection and sustainability:

“For me, the fertility goddess Margriata is a symbol of nature [...] and the respectful and conscious handling of her gifts. If we betray this original knowledge, then the slopes wither and slide, the springs dry up, our bees die, the eternal ice in the Alps melts, the polar caps too. Corin Curschellas wrote her first major composition in 1979/1980 while she was still a student, namely the theatrical composition for the play Woman by Edward Bond at the Schauspielhaus Zürich under the musical direction of George Gruntz .

In 2003 Corin Curschellas composed the music for the television film Meier Marilyn by Stina Werenfels together with Christian Rösli .

In 2014 Corin Curschellas developed the cultural-political composition project “Uccelin - a Singing Bird Suite”. The suite pays homage to and supports the art project “Uccellin” (German little bird ) by the Chur artist Hans Danuser . The subject matter is the counting verses of children, the political subject is the influence of politics on art.

Corin Curschellas also composes songs for Michael von der Heide (for example the award-winning title Jeudi amour , 1998), previously also for Vera Kaa and Dodo Hug .
