Franz Hackl junior (* 1967 in Schwaz ) is an Austrian jazz musician ( trumpet ) and musical instrument maker .

Hackl, whose father is a classical trumpeter and instrument maker, learned from his father not only how to play the trumpet, but also how to build it. At the age of 14 he already became solo trumpeter with the Original Tiroler Kaiserjäger , with whom he toured several times in North America. As a teenager he got to know jazz in the local jazz cafe and got tips from musicians like Randy Brecker or Tiger Okoshi . After completing his apprenticeship as an instrument maker, he studied philosophy and musicology, then studied at the jazz department of the Vienna Conservatory and performed in the Vienna Art Orchestra ( Tango from Obango ). Finally he moved to New York, where he refined his training with Lew Soloff and played with the group Sound Liberation around Gene Pritsker and in projects by John Clark and David Taylor . With Paul Zauner he founded the band ITSLYF in 1992, in which Thomas Kugi, Gottfried Stöger, David Gilmore , Kenny Davis , Rodney Holmes and Pavan Kumar toured worldwide and released the album Hep Caolin between 1992 and 1997 . With his IDO Quartet (with Adam Holzman , Kim Plainfield and James Genus ) he interprets Tyrolean folk tunes in the style of fusion jazz . He can also be heard on albums by Corin Curschellas and Peter Herbert .

Since 1993 he has organized the Outreach Festival & Academy in Schwaz every year . Trumpets are also built in his workshop, which are also based on his own inventions.
