Hélène Labarrière

Hélène Labarrière (born October 23, 1963 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) is a French jazz and improvisation musician ( double bass , electric bass ).

Labarrière grew up in Clichy-sur-Seine and turned to the double bass at the age of 16. During her studies at the Conservatories of Boulogne and Gennevilliers , she first performed with Pierre Brunel before working in the group Ladies First with Marie-Ange Martin, Micheline Pelzer and Dominique Borker from 1983 . In 1986 she recorded with Lee Konitz and played with Daniel Humair and with the quartet of Éric Barret (with Marc Ducret ), then with the groups of Alex Grillo and Sylvain Kassap . In the early 1990s she was part of Joachim Kühn's trio (with Wolfgang Reisinger ), worked with Jean-Marc Padovani and Michel Portal and with the Vienna Art Orchestra .

With her own group Machination, which she founded in 1993 with Corin Curschellas and Noël Akchoté , she performed successfully at festivals; She then worked with Curschellas and Benoît Delbecq in the Trio Jacques et les Veuves Joyeuses . In 1998 she founded a new quartet with Sophie Agnel , François Corneloup and Mark Sanders . She currently plays in the actus quartet with Corneloup, Christophe Marguet and Hasse Poulsen . Together with John Greaves she founded the Robert Wyatt project Dondestan with Karen Mantler and Jacques Mahieux , with whom she also appeared at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival in 2008 . Labarrière also performs solo programs as a bassist, for example on the Jazzdor Strasbourg-Berlin .

She was also a member of Yves Robert's band and recorded with him the album été (1999). While recording the Durruti album for the nato label , she met Tony Hymas and Evan Parker . She also worked with Dominique Pifarély and Louis Sclavis .
