Micheline Pelzer

Micheline Pelzer (born July 11, 1950 in Liège ; † October 4, 2014 in Paris ) was a Belgian jazz musician ( drums , also vocals , composition).

Micheline Pelzer, daughter of the saxophonist Jacques Pelzer , initially played drums as an autodidact ; then she received lessons from Jacques Thollot . In 1968 she began her career in Paris with Barney Wilen . The following year she played in Rome Post Free big band of Steve Lacy and performed at the Festival de Liège on. There Wayne Shorter became aware of her, who invited her to participate in his album Moto Grosso Feio (1970). During her stay in New York City, she worked a. a. also with David Liebman , Steve Grossman , Richie Beirach , Chick Corea and Woody Shaw . After her return to Europe she became a member of the Moshi formation of Barney Wilen; an album of the same name was made in 1971. With her father, her cousin Steve Houben and the American pianist and singer Ron Wilson , she formed the band Open Sky Unit in 1973 , which consisted of various line-ups until August 1994.

With the Jacques & Micheline Pelzer Quartet , to which Alby Cullaz and Michel Graillier belonged, she recorded the album Song for René in 1975 (on this album she also sang). In 1977 she moved to Paris with her husband Michel Graillier. During this time she toured with Chet Baker , performed in Paris with Jacques Hélian's big band and was involved in the recording of the score for Die Bankiersfrau (1980, directed by Francis Girod ). In 1982 she founded the formation Ladies First with Marie-Ange Martin and Hélène Labarrière , with whom she appeared in clubs and at various festivals until 1986, at Jazz à Vienne with Dee Dee Bridgewater . At the Jazz à Liège Festival , she performed with her father in 1991, 1992 and 1994. From 1993 she worked in a duo with the saxophonist Nelly Pouget ; she played with Michel Graillier and in the backing band of singer Julie Monley . In the following years she led her own formation, u. a. with Alain Jean-Marie .

After Jacques Pelzer's death in 1994, she helped transform her father's house into a jazz club , the Jacques Pelzer Jazz Club in Thier-à-Liège . There she also played with Steve Grossman and Dave Liebman. In the field of jazz she was involved in nine recording sessions between 1970 and 1992. a. also with Jean-Christophe Renault ( Valse pour Clotilde , 1982). She composed several titles for Jacques Thollot's album Résurgence (1977).

She died of complications from thyroid cancer .
