Sylvain Kassap (born October 1, 1956 in Villemomble ) is a French musician (clarinets, alto saxophone, percussion, keyboards, composition) in the field of creative jazz and new music .

Act

Sylvain Kassap studied musicology, played with Claude Barthélemy , Michel Portal and Bernard Vitet during this time , completed his studies in 1977 and then worked with musicians such as John Surman / Barre Phillips / Stu Martin . Later founded the formation Molto Mobile and also worked with François Tusques and from 1980 with Günter Sommer . In 1985 he founded the Ensemble Saxifrages! with Claude Barthélemy. Throughout his career, he has also worked with Phil Minton , Sam Rivers ( Eight Day Journal , 1998), Yves Robert , Michel Godard , Philippe Deschepper , Bruno Chevillon , Jacques Mahieux , Eddy Louiss , Steve Lacy , Joe McPhee , Tony Coe , Okay Temiz , the Trio des Clarinettes and Anthony Ortega , but also with Marcel Azzola . In 2006 he played with his quartet of Didier Petit (cello), Arnauld Cuisinier (bass) and Edward Perraud (percussion) at the Jazz Festival in Bruges ; In 2008 he appeared in the Wyatt project by John Greaves and Hélène Labarrière at the 39th German Jazz Festival in Frankfurt .

Kassap was also active as a composer of film music, for example for the films Vaudeville (1986) and Grand Guignol by Jean Marbœuf and of music for dance and theater. As an interpreter of new music, he has recorded works by Luciano Berio , John Cage , Luc Ferrari , Jacques Rebotier , François Rossé and Karlheinz Stockhausen and is a member of the Ars Nova and Laborinthus ensembles . With Didier Petit and Xu Fengxia he has been forming the freely improvising East-West Trio since 2010 .

Kassap's style unites a variety of influences from free jazz to imaginary folklore to traditional music styles from the Balkans and non-European regions.
