Uli Scherer

Uli Scherer (born March 26, 1953 in Villach ; † November 2018 ) was an Austrian pianist and composer of avant-garde jazz .

Scherer studied piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . He was a founding member of the Vienna Art Orchestra , to which he belonged from 1977 to 1997 and with which he recorded numerous albums. In addition, he has worked with Wolfgang Puschnig for many years , especially in the formations AM4 and SamulNori & Red Sun as well as realized projects with Klaus Dickbauer . Most of the ensembles and projects mentioned have also performed compositions by him. He also wrote works for the Ensemble Kontrapunkte and the Arnold Schönberg Choir . In recent years the focus of his compositional work has been in the field of theater music; he wrote for both Austrian and Swiss theaters. Above all, his warm and independent style made him an outstanding musician within the Austrian jazz scene. He also worked with Albert Mangelsdorff , Eberhard Weber , Günter Baby Sommer , Kenny Wheeler , Matthieu Michel , Lauren Newton and NDR Bigband as well as cross-genre collaboration with Ernst Jandl and Wolfram Berger .

From 1986 to 1990 he taught at the St.Gallen Jazz School in Switzerland, and since 1995 he has been teaching jazz piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Prizes and awards

In 1988 Scherer was awarded the German Cabaret Prize with the other participants in the Jandl project . In 1990 he received the Canton Aargau Culture Prize and in 1996 the City of Villach Culture Prize .
