Ashley Slater

Ashley W. Slater (born April 20, 1961 in Schefferville , Québec ) is a Canadian jazz musician ( trombone , tuba ), singer and vocal artist.

Career

Ashley Slater grew up in Hanford, California and emigrated to Edinburgh in 1977 . He joined the Regimental Band of the Royal Scots and played trombone in this army band until 1983. He then studied at the National Center for Orchestral Studies in Greenwich (London). From 1984 he was a trombonist in the Loose Tubes , with whom he stayed for six years and where he also played the tuba. He also worked with Django Bates and his Delightful Principles , with George Russell's Timeless Orchestra , the London Jazz Orchestra, the Carla Bley Big Band and with Andy Sheppard . From March 1999 he played in Gary Crosby's Jazz Jamaica Allstars .

In 1988 the first album was released with his band Microgroove . Together with Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) he founded the band Freak Power in 1993. In 1995 their song Turn on, Tune in, Cop Out was in the European charts. After the band broke up, he worked on solo projects. In 2002 he released his first solo album, Biglounge . In 2007 the album Cellophane followed . With Freddy Fresh he founded the electro swing band Kitten & The Hip , with whom he released the album Hello Kitten in 2014 .

As a vocal artist, he took on speaking roles in various TV series (including Jim Jam & Sunny ) and films . He teaches Urban and Electronic Music at Southampton Solent University .
