Electroswing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Electroswing emerged around the turn of the millennium and describes the combination of modern, electronic dance music and swing , a style of jazz from the 1920s and 1930s. Parov Stelar , Caravan Palace and TAPE FIVE are representatives of this genre. Other bands are the French KKC, the Electronic Swing Orchestra , Gramophonedzie , Klischée , Waldeck and also Caro Emerald . At least since the Australian duo Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP with their hit We No Speak Americano was played all over Europe on radio stations, the electro swing prevailed. The French label Wagram released four compilations under the name Electro-Swing Fever in 2010, with recordings and remixes that were current at the time.

meaning

In electroswing, singing, instrumentation, typical rhythms and melodies from swing are usually accompanied by electronic sounds and beats and phrases are repeated. The danceability of the swing is enhanced by the electronic bass line and the pumping house bass drum. Some artists also have influences from klezmer , gypsy jazz and world music . In some cases, the music that is used as a basis extends into the 1950s. Therefore, in addition to Charleston and Swing, Boogaloo , Rock 'n' Roll and Cumbia are also processed. Internationally, parties are held in at least 13 countries where people dance to electroswing. More than 10,000 people came to an event on May 1, 2012 at Berlin-Tempelhof Airport . One of the most successful series of events is the Electro Swing Revolution with regular parties in Berlin, Marburg and Bremen. The organizers also run the world's first Electro Swing web radio and have been releasing the compilation since 2011: The Electro Swing Revolution (Lolas World Records), which is one of the most important CD samplers in this genre.

Electroswing joins a variety of styles that combine jazz with other styles (e.g. nu-jazz ).

Emergence

In the early 1990s, musicians such as the Greenskeepers and Mike Dixon began to incorporate jazz and swing elements into their contemporary productions. However, the sound of the tracks produced was more reminiscent of funky house than swing house. It was not until the French label G-Swing that an album was released in 1992 that could be described as Swing House. An early chart success was the song Doop by the Dutch house duo Doop in 1994. In the late 1990s, swing house enjoyed great popularity until it disappeared in early 2000.

The nu-jazz that developed during this time combined funk and jazz, but also swing with dance , house and techno . One of the most famous representatives is the French Ludovic Navarre alias St. Germain. Many electro swing artists come from the nu jazz scene.

Initially, some DJs like Chris Tofu brought out remix versions of existing swing and lounge titles . The first electroswing works by artists such as Jurassic 5 or Mr. Scruff were mostly one-off experiments and were not referred to as electroswing, but rather as swing house or nu-jazz. In 2005 the triumph of the young genre began with artists such as Parov Stelar and Caravan Palace , who consolidated the sound of G-Swing and Waldeck . The TAPE FIVE project, founded in 2003, also helped shape the development of electroswing.

After a swing house scene had emerged in Chicago in 1999, the French label BNO had the idea of bringing out a complete collection based on the new style. Then , at the end of 2006, G-Swing released Swing for Modern Clubbing, the first electroswing album. A decisive point was reached when the first compilation was published in 2009, which the English dance music magazine Mixmag described as the first milestone in electroswing.

From 2009 onwards, many clubs related to electroswing emerged, until 2011 when the White Mink and Electro Swing Club presented the first electroswing festival, a one-day event in London. At the end of 2011 , the song Booty Swing by Parov Stelar was used in a promotional video for Cosmopolitan Las Vegas , which was a Deutsche Bank casino until 2014 , and thus presented the European style of popular music to the American public for the first time.
