Stefan Attila Rusconi (born February 14, 1979 in Zurich ) is a Swiss pianist , sound artist and composer specializing in jazz , noise and improvised music . Rusconi lives with his family in Zurich and Berlin .

Live and act

Rusconi received piano lessons from the age of seven. Between 1999 and 2003 he studied jazz at the music department of the Zurich University of the Arts . Rusconi took lessons from Ethan Iverson , Kurt Rosenwinkel and Bill Carrothers , among others . During his studies he founded his own acoustic playing band RUSCONI in 2001 , in which Claudio Strüby (drums) and Richard Pechota and since 2004 Fabian Gisler (bass) played. After 14 years, hundreds of concerts worldwide and 7 album productions, they dissolved the band by mutual agreement in 2017.

Since 2010 he has been working on his sound acoustics project The Kitchen And I , which playfully approaches the kitchen as a room and sound collection. With the pianist and producer Ephrem Lüchinger he founded the duo Whistler & Hustler in 2011 , which released the album The Whistler & Hustler Session on Qilin Records in 2013 . He designed the artwork for the album Color & Style by the band RISS and for the LP Revolution by his band RUSCONI , together with the Berlin artist Paul Polaris .

Since 2015 he has played on the church organ in the Levitation project together with violinist Tobias Preisig in numerous churches in Europe. In 2017 they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival , among others, and worked together with the director Thom Luz on a multi-room sound and fog installation at the 2018 International Summer Festival at Kampnagel .

He also collaborated with Fred Frith , Roman Signer , Thomas Wydler , Pipilotti Rist , Kaspar Ewald, Laura de Weck , Bo Wiget , Norma Winstone , Beate Bartel , Evelinn Trouble, Darja Stocker , Tobias Preisig , Dieter Meier , the ARTE Quartet , Emilie Welti , Till Brönner and Luca Aquino.

Dance and theater

He wrote the music for the play Children of the Sun by Maxim Gorki , directed by Nora Schlocker , which premiered in 2015 at the Basel Opera House.

Also in 2015, together with bassist Paul Lemp and drummer Marc Lohr, he wrote the music for the piece Until our Hearts Stop by American choreographer Meg Stuart , which was co-produced by the Münchner Kammerspiele and the Ruhrtriennale . The piece, in which he also plays, then toured Europe.

Since 2017 he has been developing the music for the pieces YEW ( Hebbel am Ufer , 2018), YEW outside (cooperation between Hebbel am Ufer and Botanischer Volkspark Blankenfelde-Pankow , 2018) and the group piece The Nature of Us (Hebbel am Ufer , 2019) by the choreographer duo Angela Schubot & Jared Gradinger.

Film music

In 2011 he wrote the music for the documentary film Tinguely by Thomas Thümena. In 2016 he wrote the music for the movie The Way Down To Your Belly by Jonas Meier.

Prizes and awards

Rusconi was the winner of the main sponsorship award in the Generations masterclasses under the direction of Roman Schwaller in Frauenfeld in 2002. In 2003 he received the sponsorship award from the Friedl Wald Foundation and the Alter Prize from the Berti Alter Foundation . As part of the priority jazz funding, he and his band of the same name were supported by Pro Helvetia from 2010 to 2012 . In 2011 Rusconi won the German music industry award ECHO Jazz as "best pianist (national) [sic]" for the album It's a Sonic Life . In 2013 he was awarded a year of work by the City of Zurich.
