Christoph Irniger (* 30th October 1979 in Zurich ) is a Swiss Jazz - Tenor saxophonist , bandleader and composer .

Live and act

Christoph Irniger studied music education at the Zurich University of the Arts and performance jazz with Christoph Grab and Nat Su at the Lucerne University from 2000 to 2006 . In the following years he traveled regularly to Berlin and New York , where he a. a. Took lessons with Dave Liebman , Mark Turner and Ari Hoenig .

In 2007 his debut album Chat Noir (Brambus Records) was released. Since then, Irniger can be heard on around two new records every year. In addition to his own bands, Irniger was involved in various other band projects. From 2007 to 2014 he was a member of the Lucerne Jazz Orchestra under the direction of David Grottschreiber , where he a. a. played with Dave Douglas , Claudio Puntin , Hayden Chisholm , Nils Wogram and Matthias Spillmann . He was also a member of the band No reduce with Nasheet Waits . Irniger was involved in recordings and performances a. a. with Max Frankl , Stefan Rusconi , Christian Weber , Chris Wiesendanger , Vera Kappeler , Jean-Paul Brodbeck and Peter Frei , as well as the reggae formations Dodo & the Liberators and GG & the Informers .

Irniger lives in Zurich and has been teaching saxophone at the Zurich Conservatory Music School since 2004 . He was one of the founders of the Jazz im Seefeld in Zurich jazz series, which has been taking place since 2011, and co-founded the Zurich Jazz Workshop in 2010 .

Prizes and awards

Christoph Irniger won the Friedl Wald Foundation's advancement award in 2004 and received the “borsa di studio” for Siena Jazz 06 in 2006. In 2010 he took 3rd place at the ZKB Jazz Award with the Cowboys from Hell. For the second album Gowanus Canal by the Christoph Irniger Trio, he received a composition grant from the STEO Foundation and he and his band Pilgrim will be supported from 2015 to 2017 as part of the priority jazz funding from Pro Helvetia .
