Alexandra Grimal (* 1980 in Cairo ) is a French modern creative musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , composition ).

Life

Grimal took piano lessons from the age of five. At the age of fifteen she discovered the saxophone in Paris. She studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and then, after a guest stay at the Sibelius Academy, completed her Masters with John Ruocco at the Koninklijk Conservatorium The Hague in 2005 . In 2007 she took part in the Banff Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music under the direction of Dave Douglas .

With her own groups, she has released four albums so far (2016). In 2010 she toured Europe with her quartet dragons (with Nelson Veras on guitar, Jozef Dumoulin on keyboards and Dré Pallemaerts on drums) on a European tour. She has also played with Oliver Lake , Ab Baars , Michael Moore , Ralph Alessi , Manolo Cabras, Jean-Jacques Avenel , John Betsch and Rhoda Scott and has been on album productions by Sebastien Lovato, Édouard Ferlet , Fred Norel, Júlio Resende and Ruben Samama involved. She has also worked with the dancer Yasmine Hugonnet. In 2014 she brought Olivier Benoît to the Orchester National de Jazz . She also worked with Benjamin Duboc and with Théo Ceccaldi .

Her lyrical, fragile tone on the saxophone and her fragile, but at the same time balanced motifs are emphasized. Composer Ben Shenmi wrote the piece Alexandrophone for her in 2006 .

Prizes and awards

In 2007 Grimal won the International Competition for Young Jazz Soloists in Friborg and the Grand Prix du Tremplin Européen de Jazz d'Avignon with her quartet . In 2008 she received the Soloist Prize at the Tremplin l'Esprit Jazz à St Germain des Prés . In 2010 she was also nominated for the French Victoires du Jazz .
