Kris Davis

Kris Davis (born 1980 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian jazz pianist and composer . She lives in the United States.

Life

Davis studied classical piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto . In 1997 and 2000 she attended the jazz program at the Banff Center for the Arts , where she worked with Tony Malaby . On a Canada Council scholarship, she moved to New York to take composition lessons with Jim McNeely ; In 2006 she studied with Benoît Delbecq in Paris. From 2002 she worked with a quartet made up of Tony Malaby, Eivind Opsvik and Jeff Davis , with whom she performed in 2007 at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal . Davis has since released several albums with his own compositions on Fresh Sound Records . Since then she has also played in John Hollenbeck's Large Ensemble , with Jon Irabagon , Theo Bleckmann , Kermit Driscoll , Ron Horton , Ingrid Jensen , Steve Swell , Peter Herbert , Tom Rainey , Tyshawn Sorey , Stephen Gauci , Michael Bisio , Frøy Aagre and Chris Speed . Davis is also a founding member of the RIDD Quartet ( Fiction Avalanche , Clean Feed 2008). Davis teaches at Maine Jazz Camp and Queens College. The critic Mark F. Turner puts Kris Davis as a pianist / composer on a par with Myra Melford and Geri Allen .
