In the 2008/09 season he made his debut as an A-youth for their second men's team in the fourth-class Regionalliga Süd and rose with the team in the fifth-class Bayernliga .

After two seasons as a regular player in the Bayern League, Hummels was promoted to the first team for the 2011/12 season and made his debut in the third division on the first day of the game against Preußen Münster . He had already been named team captain by coach Heiko Herrlich , making him the youngest captain of SpVgg Unterhaching to date. On the 3rd match day in the 4-1 win against Kickers Offenbach , he tore a cruciate ligament, which resulted in him being out for about seven months. Hummels then underwent an arthroscopy and was out for the rest of the season. From the 2012/13 season he was second captain behind goalkeeper Stefan Riederer .

As a result of his injuries, Hummels lost his regular place in central defense. Towards the end of the first half of the season, however, he came to play more often and became a regular again in the second half of the season. So at the end of the season he made 20 appearances in the league. In the first half of the 2013/14 season he only made four appearances due to bone edema and was now in the second team. In the second half of the season, however, he played ten times in the third division team and was able to play his way back into the starting eleven. On the first day of the 2014/15 season , Hummels suffered the second cruciate ligament rupture of his professional career and was out for eight months as a result. He ended his active career at the end of the 2015/16 season.
