Cory Smythe

Cory Smythe (* 1977 ) is an American pianist who works in both classical and improvisational music.

Live and act

Smythe studied at Indiana University , especially with Luba Edlina-Dubinsky , and at the University of Southern California with Stewart Gordon. Smythe plays classical and new music as well as improvisations ; he also crosses the line to jazz . He appears both as a soloist and as a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and has premiered works by Philippe Hurel , Magnus Lindberg and David Lang . He has the violinist Hilary Hahn on several concert toursaccompanied on the piano. Her recording of 27 encores commissioned by Hilary Hahn ( In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores ) was released by Deutsche Grammophon in 2013 and was awarded a Grammy in 2015.

After Tom Lord , he was also involved in recording sessions with Anthony Braxton , Vijay Iyer , Tyshawn Sorey , Pete Robbins , Biagio Coppa , Tyshawn Sorey ( The Inner Spectrum of Variables , 2016), Devin Gray and Timuçin Şahin . In 2017 he was a guest at the Jazzfest Berlin as a member of the Tyshawn Sorey Trio .
