Hilary Hahn (born November 27, 1979 in Lexington , Virginia ) is an American violinist .

biography

Hahn grew up in Baltimore . Your ancestors come from the Palatinate ( Bad Dürkheim ); she is the only one in her family who speaks German , as well as French and Japanese .

Her first important teacher was Klara Berkovich, a representative of the Russian violin school from Odessa . At the age of ten she moved to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia to teach Jascha Brodsky , who was Eugène Ysaÿe's last student in the Belgian tradition.

Hahn made her first public appearance at the age of six. When she was ten she gave her first full-length solo concert . She played with a smaller chamber orchestra for the first time when she was twelve and also made her debut with a large orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra . Since then, Hahn has given a total of over 800 concerts, over 500 of which together with orchestras. She has performed in over 200 cities in 27 countries on four continents. She has worked with 150 conductors.

In Germany she made her debut in 1995 with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of Lorin Maazel .

In 2007 she and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra performed under conductor Gustavo Dudamel on the occasion of the 80th birthday of Pope Benedict XVI. in the Vatican. The program included works by Antonín Dvořák , Giovanni Gabrieli and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart .

Since March 2009 Hahn has been a member of the Friends of the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden , a non-profit association that supports the Festspielhaus.

Hahn and her husband have lived in Cambridge , Massachusetts since 2016 after living in New York City for several years . They have two daughters.

As a CD debut in 1997 Hahn recorded a sonata and two partitas for solo violin by JS Bach . On the next album she took her Beethoven - Violin Concerto in front with which they were 15-year-old debut in Germany. In 2000, the recording was released of a violin concerto by Edgar Meyer , which he had dedicated to her. In the following year she recorded the violin concerto by Johannes Brahms as well as the rarely performed violin concerto by Igor Stravinsky .

But she also played the score by James Newton Howard for the Hollywood film The Village . She can also be heard in the songs To Russia My Homeland on the album Worlds Apart and Witch's Web on the album So Divided by the American rock band … And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead .

Instruments

Hilary Hahn owns two violins by the French violin maker JB Vuillaume , a Guarneri del Gesù model from 1864, which she has been playing since she was 14, and a Stradivarius model from 1865. She uses both instruments regularly. Hahn strings A, D and G strings with dominant strings, the E string with strings from Pirastro in gold . She uses nineteenth-century French and English bows , such as a Tubbs model primarily used on the Stradivarius model .
