Devin Gray

Devin Gray (born June 7, 1983 ) is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( drums ).

Live and act

Gray started playing the drums when he was seven and was a member of the All State Big Band while he was in high school . As a teenager he had the opportunity to play with Cleo Laine and to attend a master class by Christian McBride . He attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , where he received a scholarship a. a. studied harmony , improvisation and jazz vibraphone with Gary Thomas and Michael Formanek , as well as percussion . He continued his studies at the Banff Center for the International Jazz and Creative Music Workshop in Alberta . There he had lessons from Gene Lake , Clarence Penn and Gerald Cleaver .

During this time Gray played with Dave Ballou and in the formations Birkholz Trio, Corpulent (with Gary Thomas , Joel Grip ) and The Jolly-Boat Pirates . He began a Masters in Jazz Performance at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City with John Riley . He worked with Frank Gratkowski , Michael Formanek , Ellery Eskelin , Josh Sinton , Anna Webber and his own quintet Slicing and Dicing (with Niklas Barno, Marcelo Gabard Pazos, Ville Bromander, Erik Lindeborg) in the mid-2010s .
