Robin Verheyen (* 1983 in Turnhout ) is a Belgian modern jazz musician ( alto , tenor and soprano saxophone , composition ).
Live and act
Verheyen started playing the saxophone at the age of twelve. He first studied for three years at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven, Belgium, then for two years at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam ; he spent a year in between as a preferred student ("Dean's List") at the Manhattan School of Music . He completed his music studies with distinction. His academic teachers have included Dave Liebman , Steve Slagle , Frank Vaganée , Jasper Blom , Ferdinand Povel , Dick Oatts, and John Ruocco .
In 2005 Verheyen, already a soprano saxophonist in the saxophone quartet Saxkartel , moved to Paris for a year, where he was part of the bands of Giovanni Falzone, Remi Vignolo, Nelson Veras and Bruno Angelini. He was also a member of the Belfin Quartet, which includes himself and the bassist Joachim Florent as Belgian, the Finns Aki Rissanen (piano) and Ville Pynssi (drums). During his time as artist in residence in his birthplace in 2006/2007, he founded an international quartet with Bill Carrothers , Nicolas Thys and Dré Pallemaerts , with whom he recorded two albums. He also released two albums with his Narcissus Quartet.
In 2007 Verheyen moved entirely to New York. There he has already played and recorded with the trio of Pascal Niggenkemper Trio featuring Tyshawn Sorey and with the quartet by Roy Assaf / Eddy Khaimovich featuring Roy Hargrove . In addition to his international quartet, Robin Verheyen has founded a second quartet in New York with trumpeter Ralph Alessi , bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Jeff Davis . As a sideman he has worked with Branford Marsalis , Charnett Moffett , Eric Revis , Jeff Tain Watts , Joey Calderazzo , Jonathan Blake, Maria Schneider , Massimo Biolcati, Ravi Coltrane , Toots Thielemans , Will Calhoun , Pablo Held and the bands The 4 Runner and Roscopaje played. He was also involved in recordings by Alex Maguire , Patricio Carposs and Giovanni Falzone.
Prizes and awards
In July 2004 he became best soloist at both the Basque Gexto Jazz Festival and the international Jazz Hoeilaart competition . The following year he won the competition as a young talent in Ghent. Saxkartel received the jury's prize at the Tremplin Jazz in Avignon in 2006 . In the same year, the Belfin Quartet won the prize for the best composition in the La Défense competition. In 2008 he was awarded the Belgian Django d'Or as a “new talent”.
