Tom Van Dyck (musician)

Tom Van Dyck (born March 25, 1967 ) is a Belgian jazz saxophonist.

Live and act

After taking courses with John Ruocco , Kurt Van Herck , Ben Sluys and Jeroen Van Herzeele , Van Dyck studied jazz saxophone with Dick de Graaf and Jasper Blom at the Rotterdam Conservatory from 1991 to 1997 . He attended master classes with Lee Konitz , Kenny Wheeler and Joe Lovano and studied counterpoint with Volkert Grondsma . Since 1999 he has been teaching jazz saxophone at the Jozef Van Poppel Music Academy in Deurne.

In 1993 Van Dyck toured Indonesia with a soul and funk band led by David Rockefeller . He then performed at the Brussels jazz club The Sounds as the leader of a quintet with Jan Muës , Ernst Vranckx , Eric Thielemans and Bas Kooimans . From 1994 he was a member of the big band of the Rotterdam Conservatory under the direction of Bob Brookmeyer and Ab Schaap .

With the group Pentachrome (Eric Thielemans, Laurent Blondiau , Guus Bakker and Andreas Suntrop ), for which he also works as a composer, he won the second prize at the Erasmus Jazz Prize in Rotterdam in 1996 . With the band Geel! , for which he also composed, he won second prize at the GETXO Festival in Bilbao in 1997 and first prize at the Dutch Jazz Contest in 1998 .

In 1999 he took part with the Tim Vets Quartet (with Kurt Van Herck and Oene van Geel ) in the jazz competition in Helmond, the Netherlands, where the group won first prize. He then became a member of the group Animo & cinema ( Michel Bisceglia , Ben Sluys , Frank De Ruyter , Laurent Blondiau , Jan Nihoul , Kurt Budé ) and of Augustin Folys Da Funkamental Bass Project (with Patrick D'Orcean , Manu Codjia and Viveka Turrentine ) .

With Kris Duerinckx , Mark Haanstra and Andreas Suntrop he founded the quartet Odd On , whose first album About Time was released in 2002. Van Dyck leads his own quartet (with Andreas Suntrop, Mark Haanstra and Mimi Verderame ), as well as the groups Saxkartel (with Kurt Van Herck, Sara Meyer and Steve Delannoye ) and t-unit 7 (with Michel Paré , Fred Delplancq , Ewout Pierreux , Mark Haanstra and Herman Pardon ). As a sideman he plays u. a. in the Tuesday Night Orchestra , The Belgium Jazz Big Band and the Village Big Band .
