Laurent Blondiau
Laurent Blondiau (born December 24, 1968 ) is a Belgian jazz trumpeter and band leader. In addition to the trumpet, he also plays the flugelhorn and composes.
Live and act
Blondiau studied from 1986 at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels with Bert Joris and Richard Rousselet . In 1990 he received a first prize there.
He is very active in the Belgian jazz scene, where he works with Aka Moon , Nathalie Loriers , the saxophonist and clarinetist Bo Van Der Werf's Octurn group , the Brussels Jazz Orchestra , DJ Grazzoppa's DJ Big Band, Steve Houben and among others Toots Thielemans played. He also played a lot with French jazz musicians such as Denis Badault , Malik Mezzadri (Magic Malik), the singer William Sheller , and a lot with African musicians.
Since 1997 he has been playing with his own avant-garde band Mâäk`s Spirit , which is a fusion of free jazz , electronic music , rock and world music . It consists of changing formations. Her first album Live was released in 1998, at the time with saxophonist Jeroen Van Herzeele , Salvatore La Rocca (bass), Hans van Oosterhout (drums). Her album Le nom du vent, inspired by Gnawa music (made in 2001), was released in 2003 by Nefertiti with the line-up Blondiau, Van Herzeele, Evrard, Michel Massot (trombone, tuba), Eric Thielemans (drums), Otti Van der Werf (bass) . With the band Blondiau realized projects of African music: first of all with Gnawa musicians from Morocco (project Al Majmaa with the Gnawa Express and Baba Sissoko from Mali, album Almajmaâ at Igloo 2004, then live concerts at festivals in Belgium, France, Tangier), later with Bambara hunters from Mali and with the Vodun music from Benin (album Kojo). On their album Stroke (2008) they work with word artists from South Africa. In 2008 her fifth album 5 was released (made in 2006), a jazz album based on songs by her guitarist Jean-Yves Evrard . In 2011 Blondiau started a Project Electro in which dancers are also involved. Maäk's Spirit also accompanied musicians like Misha Mengelberg , Marilyn Mazur and Joachim Kühn .
In 2009 Blondiau received the Prix Bobby Jaspar from the French Academie du Jazz as the best European jazz musician.
