Maria Grand

Maria Grand (* 1992 in Geneva ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , composition ).

Live and act

Grand grew up in a musical family and began playing the saxophone at the age of ten. In 2011, she moved to New York to study music at the age of 18. She took lessons from Ohad Talmor , Steve Coleman and Antoine Roney shortly after arriving in the US . She studied for three semesters at New York City College before working as a professional musician.

Grand toured Europe in 2012 with the Antoine Roney Quartet. As a member of the Doug Hammond quintet , she performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival . In 2013 she performed with Steve Coleman and his Talea Ensemble at the Newport Jazz Festival ; as a saxophonist, she is also involved in two of Coleman's albums ( Synovial Joints , Morphogenesis ). She released two albums with her own groups. She also played with Larry Roland , Valery Ponomarev , Howard Williams , Steve Lehman , Julian Priester , Vijay Iyer , Craig Taborn , Dafnis Prieto , John Zorn and Darcy James Argue . She can also be heard on albums by Román Filiú , Greg Fox, Tamara Renée and Doug Hammond. She was one of the founders of the We Have Voice Collective , which expanded the MeToo movement to include jazz music.
