Fabian Almazan
Fabian Almazan (born April 16, 1984 in Havana ) is a Cuban- US-American jazz pianist and film composer .
Life
Almazan, who first grew up in Cuba, then had classical piano lessons with Conchita Betancourt in Miami , where he attended the New World School of the Arts as a high school from 1998 to 2002 . In 2003 he received a scholarship to the Brubeck Institute in California, where he studied with Mark Levine and played with Dave Brubeck and Christian McBride . He then studied in New York City at the Manhattan School of Music with Kenny Barron (Masters 2009), had private lessons with Jason Moran and played in Terence Blanchard's band , on whose recommendation he studied at the Sundance Institute's Composers Lab . Then he composed several film scores. He also works as a film musician (including in the George Lucas film Red Tails ) and has participated in the recordings of Terence Blanchard ( Choices , 2009) and bassist Linda Oh ( Initial Here , 2012). With his trio and a string quartet , he performed in 2011 in New York's Village Vanguard . Almazan recorded his 2011 debut album Personalities ( Palmetto Records ), which collects his own chamber music compositions, with Linda Oh and drummer Henry Cole. The follow-up album Rhizome was released in 2014 as the first joint production by Blue Note and ArtistShare .
In 2015 Almazan curated the SWR New Jazz Meeting ; it was there that the album Realm of Possibilities was created with Anna Webber , Chris Dingman , Ryan Feirrera , Linda Oh and Henry Cole .
