Ferchard, 2nd Earl of Strathearn
Ferchard, 2nd Earl of Strathearn (also Ferteth or Ferquhard , * before 1130 ; † 1171 ) was a Scottish nobleman .
Life
Nothing is known about his origins, but it is believed that Máel Ísu , his predecessor as Earl / Mormaer of Strathearn , was also his father.
Hints in church documents indicate that Ferchard had a strong interest in church matters. His estates were formed into a diocese at "... the instigation of a mighty lord ..." , which received its first bishop in 1155 with Dunblane as its headquarters.
Ferchards first appeared in 1160. Together with five other Earls he appeared to Parliament in Perth , where he led an attack on King Malcolm IV , whom he then besieged unsuccessfully in Perth Castle . The king was accused of endangering the welfare of the people through his friendship with Henry II of England ; it was feared that Scotland might become a vassal of England. The assembled clergy intervened; the dispute was settled, the king and the earls reconciled.
Ferchard was married once. The marriage was concluded around 1150, as can be seen from a deed of gift from his son from 1198. His wife's name was given as Ethen or Ethne, but their origins remain unknown. With her he had two sons and a daughter:
- Gille Brigte (also Gilbert † 1223), his heir as 3rd Earl of Strathearn;
- Máel Ísu (also Malise , † around 1214), ⚭ Ada, illegitimate daughter of David of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon ;
- Christian ⚭ Sir Walter Olifard.
