Malcolm IV

Malcolm IV (Máel Coluim mac Eanric) (born March 20, 1142 , † December 9, 1165 in Jedburgh ) was King of Scotland . He was the eldest son of Earl Henry of Scotland († 1152) and his wife Ada de Warenne and the grandson of King David I.

After the early death of his father Heinrich, Malcolm was determined to be the heir of his grandfather David. He was crowned at Scone in 1153 . In 1157 he met the English King Henry II in Chester , where he signed a peace treaty and gave up his claim to Cumberland , Westmorland , Northumberland and Carlisle .

Malcolm IV is described as pious, feeble, and chaste. He died unmarried and childless, which is why he is also called "Malcolm the Virgin". Little is known about his life, but he appears to have been an ineffective monarch. He was the last Scottish monarch with a Scottish name. His younger brother Wilhelm I succeeded him on the throne.
